We will introduce out to 8-10 selections per series in all genres. Hopefully you will enjoy - Jim Thorpe

New Wave: Simple Minds - Sister Feelings Call (1981)

Most people know of Simple Minds from "Don't You Forget About Me" and the Once Upon A Time Record. SM started around 1979, This record is their 4th and you can really hear they found their sound semi goth to new wave. The music here is a little haunting yet intellectually structured in the sounds they achieved on SSC. Below is the 1st track of the record " Theme For Great Cities" , I recommend checking the album in full to get a sense of the overall sound at this time.

Jazz/Fusion:  The New Tony Williams Lifetime - Believe It (1975)

Tony Williams is one of my favorite drummers of all time. This record "Believe It" is my favorite it features Allan Holdsworth on Guitar. They don't make Jazz/Fusion like this anymore its funky, technical and drive home hard. There is a lot explorations on this record that make this a masterpiece. Tony's drumming is superb makes this a powerful record. Check out the track "Fred".

Hip Hop:  The Krown Rulers - Paper Chase (1988)

A true Hip Hop classic. I remembering hearing the track "Kick the Ball" at the Sound of Market. it was one of those who's that moments. I picked up the record immediately, it has a very different feel that a lot of the records out at that time. The beats and the rhymes were slamming and still hold strong today. If you don't know about KR than you show wet your whistle with "Paper Chase" below

Rock  D-Generation - No Lunch (1996)

D Generation is one of those bands that should have been noticed on a more national level. The plain just rock with punk and angst influences. I didn't realize this was available on vinyl, I saw an Ebay listing of this and immediately purchased the limited 2 10" disc set. Luckily I had the chance to see them live a few times in NYC and Philly. There are no fillers all songs rock hard with catchy melodies without entering the pop punk world. If  you like rock/punk mix search them out , here is the track "She Stands There"

Punk  Agent Orange - Living in Darkness (1981)

The memories of this album are timeless for me. I found out about AO in 1981 from Skateboarding magazine it was listed in top 5 records at that time. Luckily the Sound Odyssey by my had a copy and at 12yrs old old it was a life changer.  Definitely music to skate by at the time. AO were skate punk, there production was very good and had a commercial feel to as a look back on the record. But songs like "Bloodstains", "Too Young to Die" and very cool sound " Everything Turns Grey" are still in my Spotify playlists today!!!

Proggressive:  Vauxdvihl - To Dimension Logic (1994 - reissue on vinyl 2014)

Vauxdvihl is must hear Progress Metal band from Australia. Its a release that never got a major push in the prog metal world. Most people stumbled upon the by accident. Their sound is in the vein of Queensryche/Fates Warning but darker and more complex arrangements.  They don't kill you virtuoso guitar solos but like a true prog band take you on a musical journey on each song. It is also one of those bands you need to listen in a whole and few times to really get the brilliance of this record. I was so stoked when this was released on vinyl, it is a treasure to have this. Check out "Separate Ends" for a taste

Metal:  Racer X - Extreme Volume Live (1988)

If you into virtuoso guitar players, you know of Paul Gilbert and Racer X ( MR BIG) . If not and into a straight ahead hard rock/metal band with shredding guitars & vocals in the vein of Rob Halford this right up your alley. They were on the tail end of the metal scene , yet a very popular LA band at the time, they never got to the mainstream at the time. The gained more popularity after the success of Mr Big when more people found out about Pauls insane playing. This live record rips and you can hear the power of this band. Check out "Loud and Clear"

Funk: Prince - Purple Reign in NYC Vol 1 & 2 (bootleg - 1985)

What can be said about Prince? My all time favorite artist. Here is a killer bootleg from 1985 that was released by Parachute Recordings on purple vinyl. The best thing with Prince is two shows are never the same so quality bootlegs from him are treasures to say the least. This is the Purple Reign Tour so all the hits are on hear, some extended jams. There are several tracks from his earlier records many with different arrangements and updating which shows his pure genius at the time, most people wanted PR and by revamping the old tracks probably made people look at his early stuff. Sorry no clip available but worth searching out.

Rare Find: Stray - Stray (1970)

Stray is a Hard Rock/Pysch band out of the UK. Their debut album is an underrated release in 1970. The band itself was so overlooked and probably because they were ahead of their time with the release with the fuzzed out guitars, to mellow psychedelic to hard rocking riffs. They are one of those Nuggets of the British scenes best kept secrets. Here is the full album.

Compilation: Various: Burning Ambitions: A History Of Punk (1982)

This is a UK released record and in my opinion the best Punk/New Wave comp of all time. I know its bold but the artists alone should sell along with the mash up cover of Sgt. Pepper. Click Here for the full listing of artists, some of the artists are The Buzzocks, Xray Spex, Adverts, Wire, The Damned, Gen X, Killing Joke, Dead Kennedys, the Vibrators and the list goes on for this 2 LP release. There are copies out there but come at a high price for a decent shape copy.

Music Trends in 2019

Music Trends in 2019

Sorry its been awhile since we posted something on our DVT Entertainment Blog. We took a little much need breather to gear up for 2019. We wanted to put together a lot of information on music trends. below there are several links to great articles about Music Trends. Here are some of our insights for trends we see along with links to other articles about the futere trends in 2019.

Changing the Venue Door Deal Model:
This has been a topic since the dawn of the cover charge at venues. This was a struggle even for us at DVT, we have modeled ourselves that ARTISTS FIRST. It was always a struggle, the door would cover sound, production, staff and even some places took a percentage before the artist saw a dime. So, how do we change that model that is rampart across the country. We met with our friends at Broken Goblet Brewing to discuss this with their new 250+ Brewery/Venue set to open in May-ish. So we wanted to keep the venue a FREE COVER all the time, excluding National Shows. So we are agreed that a Tiered Guarantee for the artists was the way to go. The second part is pure genius that the BGB came up with for a bonus for the bands. The concept is to have a special beer brew for the bands to promote for the show, ex. Band IPA. The beer is priced at $6. BGB will give $3 of each beer sold back to the band for a bonus. So if 100 drafts were bought its an extra $300 on top of your guarantee. Also 100% artists merch sales goes to the artists.
We believe this going to be a game changer on various levels, but the most import thing is building your fanbase. So you get a free cover, top notch sound system/staff, BGB regulars, your fanbase, guarantee and bonus. Sounds like an Innovative new Way to Do Business!

Artists Working Cross Functionally:

Cross functional team is a group consisting of people from different functional areas of the music business - for example, music production, collaboration, merchandise, marketing, creative, and touring/booking. These can be working groups, where each member belongs to their functional team as well as the cross functional team, or they can be the primary structure of your goals of an artists.Cross functional teams will help artists, by bringing people together with different perspectives to make smarter, more sustainable decision making. Instead of competing for resources, cross functional teams collaborate to optimize use of time, money, and effort to improve the Artists to meet organizational goals.

In building a team you need to build a network of people that are excited to take your music to a new level from music, creative, shows and marketing to achieve success.  Some might be green in the music industry and some may have experience. It all boils down to working with creative excited people.

Artist Entrepreneurs:
Since the dawn of the musical artist, artists have branched out into movies, clothing, media companies, real estate, etc. Artists are entrepreneurs and your music is your business. To get started you need to define your mission/brand/identity of your music and yourself. Understand and know your audience. Understand basic marketing and sales. Surround yourself with good people, strong mentors, and individuals who are succeeding and want you to succeed too. This ties into the above topic of building a team and coming up with other avenues that represent you the artists and new ventures, if its a Beer, Wine, clothing line or some other product that fits your brand.
